Solar thermal and solar PV systems These include domestic, commercial and industrial energy equipment like Solar Water Heating Systems, Solar Cookers, Solar Photovoltaic Systems for Lanterns, Back-up Home Lighting Systems, and Solar Agricultural Pumps etc. These will be sourced from the best manufacturers of the country and fed into Shri Shakti’s 300 strong, 7-State dealer network under the brandname 'Shakti Solar'. Tie-ups with manufacturers are being firmed up and your participation is solicited. Is electricity a clean form of energy? Is electricity an efficient form of energy? Is electricity convenient to use? The answer from most Indians is probably a definite Yes! Although, it may appear surprising, the answer to the first two questions is a definite No and may be a No even for the third question too (considering the alternatives for various application). To understand these rather intriguing answers, it is necessary to appreciate Life Cycle Analysis of a fuel / energy form. A large percentage of electricity is produced from fossil fuels - coal or oil. At the power plant the thermal efficiency of combustion of the fuel is hardly around 40 to 50%. Then, the power plant generally operates at about 70 to 80% of its peak capacity (called plant load factor as the plant cannot operate at 100% capacity at all times). Transmission and distribution losses in the electricity grid are generally 20 to 25%(as much as 50% in the case of Delhi). Then unaccounted losses (pilferage) and power factor at the end user level also need to be considered. With all this the thermal efficiency of the fuel used to produce electricity comes down even more drastically, so much so that for each unit of electricity (KWH) consumed at application level / user level the power plant needs to produce two KWH of electricity. Although electricity may appear to be clean and efficient at the point of usage, nothing can be more distant from truth. Burning of coal or oil produces oxides of carbon (greenhouse gases), oxides of nitrogen and sulphur and even flyash in the case of coal. Hydro electric power and Nuclear power constitute a very small percentage of total power generation and even though they do not cause air pollution, they are besieged with different magnitude of environmental problems and waste disposal. With electricity pollution does not take place at the point of use but it occurs on a massive scale at the generation stage in the power plants. It is indeed horrifying to note that for each KWH of electricity consumed 1.66 kg of CO2 is emitted at the power plant.
